Tribute to African Americans this Month !It's February, the month that is dedicated as Black History Month, honoring the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history, including the civil rights movement and their artistic, cultural and political achievements.To honor someone is to show him or her the respect and how much we value them. God wants us to honor one another in this life with love and truth.Today we're giving honor to Mr.Octavius V. Catto, born 1839 and on October 10, 1871, he was murder. I was watching the news and then it came across the television screen Mr. Octavius Catto black history in Philly. The funeral of Mr.Octavius Catto created a moment of mourning that provided a distinct departure from the violence and rioting that led to his demise. The service, held in the City Armory at Broad and Race Streets, was a national event with attendees from numerous states including Delaware, Washington, New York, and Mississippi. The funeral procession, beginning at 7 a.m. in the drizzling rain at Broad and Race Streets and ending at Lebanon Cemetery in Philadelphia (the remains were later brought to Eden Cemetery in Collingdale, Pennsylvania, after Lebanon closed), included regimental guards, students, faculty and graduates from the Institute for Colored Youth, preachers, politicians, and more than 5,000 mourners. Catto was eulogized in pulpits throughout the country. We have to teach and tell our children the importance of black history not just one month a year. For more than a century after his death, Octavius Catto has been remembered for his achievements and sacrifices. Schools, Masonic lodges, and university residence halls carry his name, and he has been inducted into the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame. In 2007, the Octavius V. Catto Memorial Fund erected a headstone at his gravesite in Collingdale with the inscription “The Forgotten Hero.” In 2010, Temple University Press published a new Catto biography, Tasting Freedom: Octavius Catto and the Battle for Equality in Civil War America. In 2011, the City of Philadelphia contributed $500,000 toward a $2 million fund-raising campaign for a monument at City Hall to honor Catto, his life, and the work that ended in tragedy on Election Day 1871. God wants us to honor one another in this life with love and truth.Today we're giving honor to Mother's and Father's. Let us look at this spirituality, God has commanded us to obey His Word first. For it is written in Leviticus 19:3,“Each of you must show great respect for your mother and father, and you must always observe my Sabbath days of rest. I am the LORD your God. Honor your father and mother beloved Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”, which is the first commandment with a promise, “so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy a long life on the earth". I spoke yesterday about the respect for the elderly. Let's understand that respect starts at home. We cannot respect anyone else if we don't have respect for our parents or ourselves. For it is written in Proverbs 21:23,Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles. We all need to know when to speak and when to be silent. Now, understand that Honoring your father and mother is being respectful in word, in our thoughts and actions. For it is written in Proverbs 17:28,Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise; when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent. It's okay to disagree, but it's not okay to disrespect your parents nor others.The Word of God tells us that power is in the tongue it's life or death. For it is written in Proverbs 18:20-21,From the fruit of their mouth a person’s stomach is filled; with the harvest of their lips they are satisfied.The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Stay with me, yesterday I spoke about the 21st century generation they're almost unrecognizable to us all, but their words can be very disrespectful too. Some lessons need to be addressed at home with families before leaving the house. We have to make changes with our words, actions and deeds Children of God. Seniors should be honored daily, God has commanded us to rise up and give honor to them. For it is written in Leviticus 19:32, “‘Stand up in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the Lord. We're to respect all people, but there is a certain type of respect that we should give always to the elderly. For it is written in Isaiah 46:4,Even to your old age and gray hairs I am he, I am he who will sustain you. I have made you and I will carry you; I will sustain you and I will rescue you. Old age is a blessing from the Lord. Do they stand when a senior citizen enters the room or hold the doors for senior citizens? In other parts of the world, this still happens, but not always here in America. The 21st century is almost unrecognizable to adults of the older generation. Let's think about this generation, what is it like to be a young person in 2021-? This 21st generation depends on their ways and technology more. What would the world be like, if people would show more respect, kindness and talk things out ? The Baby Boomers are living longer and getting older now. We're trusting God's timing, plan and purpose for our lives. Abba Father thank you for "YOUR WORD." For it is written in James 5:7-8, Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. God wants us to honor one another in this life with love and truth.This week we're giving honor to Ms.Mae C. Jemison. An American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. Ms.Mae Jemison was born in nearby Decatur, Ala. on October 17, 1956, she's 64 years old. An academic star from an early age, her parents moved to Chicago for better educational opportunities. She graduated from Stanford in 1977 and got her medical degree from Cornell in 1981. She practiced medicine for a little while, did some medical research and even joined the Peace Corps. Then in 1987, she did a complete 180 and did something that a black girl born in Alabama in 1956 could only otherwise dream of when she became the first black woman to be accepted into NASA's astronaut training program.On Sept. 12, 1992 she became the first black woman in space, when she was one of seven astronauts aboard the Endeavour. It would be her only space flight and Jemison left NASA in 1993 to teach and start her own research and technology firm. She also has another first. She was the first former NASA astronaut to actually appear on any of the “Star Trek” series episodes – taking her rightful place alongside Uhura. For it is written in Psalm 32:8, The scriptures are full of stories from the past that educate us and instruct us. God provided for us with his direction in Scripture (Word). We are also instructed to turn towards Him and not to stay in past mistakes. We have to move forward and to forgive and forget. God wants us to honor one another in this life with love and truth.This week we're giving honor to Ms.Rebecca Lee Crumpler, she was born February 8, 1831, in Delaware, she died March 9, 1895, in Hyde Park, Boston, MA. After working eight years as a nurse, Ms.Rebecca Lee Crumpler began medical school at the New England Female Medical College in 1860. This school was the first in the United States to train female doctors, Harvard wrote. She graduated in 1864 as the first Black woman to receive an M.D. in the U.S. At the time, only 300 of the 54,543 physicians in the U.S. were women, and none of them were Black. After opening a medical clinic in Boston, she met women and children who lived in poverty, often asking no payment for her services. For it is written in Proverbs 19:17,Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done. Amen ! She was a servant looking to help meet the needs of the poor or needy people. For it is written in Deuteronomy 15:7-8, If anyone is poor among your fellow Israelites in any of the towns of the land the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward them. Rather, be open handed and freely lend them whatever they need. This is a very powerful verse, Children of God. Can you imagine how those in the New Testament felt when God called Saul, the killer of Christians to salvation? Saul repented, turned from his wicked ways and became Paul one of the most dynamic leaders for Christ in his time. Who are we to judge whom God will use in such a time as this? I have a co-worker that had a vision for the kids in the neighborhood.The students that needed extra help in learning. The spirit of Yahweh gave him a vision of hope for the neighborhood's children to learn. So, He walked out by faith believing and trusting in the call for help. It was him and his true friend that made a sacrifice for the students from one area that everyone gave up on (The Hood). He would visit the homes and walk into the neighborhood looking for students. He also sat at the dinner table and ate with the families. This is a history month for all God's children, it's by the spirit that lives in you. He's a man that needs to be honored today Mr. Bogash. Understand this beloved children of God, honor is due to all God's elect to do His Will. Amen ! For it is written in 1 Corinthians 1:25-27, For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength. Brothers and sisters, think of what you were when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. I'm speaking the truth in love, I'm not here to offend anyone. Most of us know the verse; "For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."So, this month ask yourself, what have you done to help someone along the way, so your living is not in vain? Let us get understanding first, there is no mention of Ash Wednesday in the Bible. But there is a tradition of donning ashes as a sign of penitence that predates Jesus. In the Old Testament, Job repents “in dust and ashes,” and there are other associations of ashes and repentance in Esther, Samuel, Isaiah and Jeremiah. Now, Ash Wednesday is important because it marks the start of the Lenten period leading up to Easter, when Christians believe Jesus was resurrected. The ashes symbolize both death and repentance. Even if you haven’t read any of Ms.Maya Angelou’s poems or other writings, you’ve heard of her. But did you know that in 1944, she became the first female Black cable car conductor in San Francisco? Ms.Maya Angelou was a civil rights activist, poet and award-winning author known for her acclaimed 1969 memoir, 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,' and her numerous poetry and essay collections. Ms.Maya Angelou was an American author, actress, screenwriter, dancer, poet and civil rights activist best known for her 1969 memoir, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, which made literary history as the first nonfiction bestseller by an African American woman. Angelou received several honors throughout her career, including two NAACP Image Awards in the outstanding literary work (nonfiction) category, in 2005 and 2009. Famous collections of Angelou’s poetry include:Oh Pray My Wings Are Gonna Fit Me Well (1975), which includes Angelou’s poem “Alone”And Still I Rise (1978), which features the beloved poem “Phenomenal Woman”Shaker, Why Don’t You Sing? This week we're giving honor to Claudette Colvin. Everyone knows the story of Ms.Rosa Parks and her brave stand or, sit on that Alabama bus. But Ms.Parks wasn’t the first to do so.On March 2, 1955, a 15-year-old Claudette Colvin was riding home from school when the city bus driver told her to give up her seat to a white passenger. She refused, saying, “It’s my constitutional right to sit here as much as that lady. I paid my fare, it’s my constitutional right.” Colvin felt compelled to stand her ground. “I felt like Sojourner Truth was pushing down on one shoulder and Mrs.Harriet Tubman was pushing down on the other,saying, ‘Sit down girl!’ I was glued to my seat,” she later told Newsweek. In 1955, a Black young girl (woman) refused to yield her seat to a white person on a bus in Montgomery, Alabama. She was removed from the bus and arrested, her ordeal sparking legal action that led to the end of Alabama's segregated bus laws and enabled a widespread civil rights movement to pick up steam.You may think you know the story, but this one isn't about Rosa Parks, it's about Claudette Colvin, a 15-year-old who made a stand against entrenched segregation nine months before Parks did, but saw her shining moment eclipsed as other narratives of the era took root in the public consciousness. Colvin sought to counter racial injustice at an early age. Born in September 1939, Colvin was raised by her great-aunt and uncle in rural Pine Level, Alabama, before moving to Montgomery at age 8. A bright, inquisitive child, she quickly caught on to the racial divisions that were more glaring than they had been in close-knit Pine Level, with the visual and verbal cues apparent throughout the bustling city serving to keep Blacks in their lane. We need to know the history and learn from it. Let us never forget the stories that our great aunts,great uncles and grandparents would tell us. Never forget the true stories of the old and our generation that has passed away. For it is written in Deuteronomy 32:7,Remember the days of old;consider the generations long past. Ask your father and he will tell you,your elders, and they will explain to you. Abba Father thank you for "YOUR WORD." For it is written in James 5:7-8, Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. May the spirit of Yahweh keep us and strengthen us by "His Spirit." For it is written in Ephesians 3:16-21,I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord's holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen. We pray for Israel, we pray for our families, we pray for one another, the sick, the needy and the oppressed,our country and we pray for those in authority in Washington DC, our churches, our teachers, our officers, our communities, the prison system, our local states and national leaders, the nation & nations, our front line workers and the body of Christ. Lord, I pray that we all have your wisdom in moving forward on the earth. Let us seek, "Your Will God" for the body of Christ. For it is written in 2 Chronicles 7:14, If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
